Corregidor Island in Cavite is not just about wonderful sceneries but is also about great stories of World War II. It’s not just a journey to a beautiful island but a journey to the past as well.
Corregidor Island During World War II
Long before Arnold Schwarzenegger made the famous line “I’ll be back!” in the 1984 movie The Terminator, General Douglas McArthur already said “I shall return!” way back on March 20, 1942.
Though he didn’t come back through a time portal naked, he did honor his word and made a big come back on October 20, 1944, in Leyte. Like the Terminator, he was wearing large sunglasses and has the same goal of helping liberate the people.
United States Aid
General McArthur’s noble act of convincing the U.S. government that helping the Philippines is part of their moral obligation was highly appreciated by the Filipinos. A statue in honor of him was erected in Corregidor Island to prove how thankful the Filipinos are to him.
Like what happened in the movie The Terminator, his act of valor in the past helped liberate the future. I’m sure that his rescue mission will be appreciated by many generations of Filipinos to come.

Explorer’s Tip
– Make sure to read all the signboards when visiting the tourist attractions. I’ve seen English speaking foreigners who were climbing up the large cannons even if there’s a large signboard (written in English) which clearly says that it’s strictly prohibited.
– Make sure to be there 30 minutes before the time, not to give you an allowance time to rest but because it’s part of their policy.
– Pregnant women are strictly not allowed to travel.
– Don’t skip the Lights and Sound Show at the Malinta Tunnel. It’s one of the best parts of our travel.
